PAX Indie Spotlight – The Riftbreaker

It's fairly common while roaming the hallways of PAX to witness all manner of genre mashups, but Exor Studios' The Riftbreaker impressively stacks a huge number of game types under one sleek roof. It's part real-time-strategy base building, part survival, part tower defense, and somehow, part action RPG. As a badass in a mech suit, you leave your base to take on hordes of enemies to gather resources and loot, which you feed back into your base to unlock new research options and more powerful static defenses.

Deciding whether you need to be back home helping defend from behind walls or roaming the world in search of rare monsters and upgrades is something that needs to be balanced, or you'll watch your base burn and lose the game. Combat is fast and fluid as you rip through swarms with continually upgraded and customized gear.

The end goal is to survive long enough to research and construct a transporter back to Earth – but that&..

PAX Indie Spotlight – Destiny’s Sword

At PAX West 2019, I checked out an incredibly ambitious tactical MMO experience from 2Dogs Games, Destiny's Sword. Destiny's Sword features real-time, squad-based tactical combat with tons of customization, but the most interesting aspect of the game is its MMO nature – up to 32 people can be involved in a single battle, each with their own squads. There are plenty of tactical games out there that are content to be “XCOMlikes” but Destiny's Sword is trying something different born from that same tactical DNA.

From your command center and base of operations, you can form squads, equipping your ranks with gear, abilities, and more. Sometimes your squad members will need extensive healing after a mission, and they can die permanently – and often will. Even if your character's don't die, their time with you is still limited, as after a certain number of missions they will retire from service. Managing your characters is a game i..

PAX Indie Spotlight – MageQuit

Bowlcut Studios combines spell-drafting and frenetic spell slinging in MageQuit. At PAX West 2019, the mage mayhem is out in full force. MageQuit fields 2-10 (free-for-all or teams) wizards in a player-vs-player brawl (online or local!), and the more players you add to the mix the more chaotic each match is.

While plenty of games feature spells and player-vs-player chaos, MageQuit uses the spell draft to make matches interesting. Before a round begins, you pick spells and abilities from a pool to arm yourselves for the next round. Wind, earth, fire, and other powerful elemental magics are available for draft. As wizards accumulate kills and wins (the last wizard or team standing wins a round), their beards grow. This is a cool flavor thing, but it also comes with some serious game implications – at the end of 9 rounds, the wizard or team with the longest beard wins. As beards grow, there's sort of a soft balance to, as the longer your beard is, the later you get to pick in the dr..

PAX Indie Spotlight – Roundguard

If you took the classic casual game Peggle and doused it in Dungeons & Dragons, that's the core philosophy behind Roundguard. At PAX West 2019, Roundguard's playful artstyle caught my eye during a trek through the massive Indie Megabooth – but the gameplay kept me around.

Wonderbelly Games is hoping to achieve something special here by bringing two rather disparate genres together. Combining the pachinko-esque pinball bounces and bloops with all kinds of RPG elements works fantastically may seem like a strange mix, but it's pretty wondrous alchemy when it comes together. As a warrior, rogue, or wizard, the trek through Castle Springbottom is a tough one. Loot, items, randomized dungeons, quests, special abilities, and all those great things fit into a map where you can select your path and perils as you work toward the big boss.

While there is permadeath and you only have one life, your achievements and acquisitions during a run can ..

Guild Wars 2 Gets A Giant Content Chunk With The Icebrood Saga

Today at PAX West 2019, Arenanet announced a giant new block of content that is available free for previous owners of the Path of Fire or Heart of Thorns expansions, The Icebrood Saga. Beginning today, Heart of Thorns is now also free for all Guild Wars 2 players.

One of the major new additions is Strike missions, 10-person boss encounters that tap into the feel of both raids and metagame living world content. New masteries keyed into the flavor and feel of the Spirits of the Wild and Norn deities also flesh out the new offerings.

The new content begins on September 17th, but like many previous living world additions will continue to receive new additions during the extensive course of its run.

Yacht Club Games Announces Shovel Knight Dig

Shovel Knight is a series that keeps on giving in ways we wouldn't expect. The newest entry in the Shovel Knight series appears to favor the shovel more than the knight, but looks like it's going to be good fun and every bit as challenging as the core game.

Co-developed by Nitrome and Yacht Club Games, Shovel Knight Dig sees our beloved horned hero in pursuit of his stolen loot, this time tunneling to the depths of his world to get it back. The game appears to draw inspiration from the likes of Mr. Driller and Dig Dug, and, well, everything with digging, yet still has that unique Shovel Knight charm for combat and bossses.

Yacht Club says that the levels use “proprietary generation techniques for infinite replayability,” meaning no two playthroughs will be the same. Yacht Club also says Shovel Knight Dig has been in development for over a year and still has plenty of time left in the cooker before release. You can see what Yacht Club and Nitrome are cooking up in the trail..

Spider-Man: Game Of The Year Edition Announced And Released

The PS4-exclusive Spider-Man was a big success right away, and its sales kept climbing until it became the most successful superhero game ever. Though some PS4 owners still haven't played Insomniac's masterpiece, that number is about to get even smaller thanks to the new Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition.

Celebrating the game's one-year anniversary (coming up on September 7), Sony revealed the new version today, which contains the full base game and a voucher for the three-episode DLC for $40. To see one episode of the DLC in action, check out the video below.

But the news doesn't stop with the Game of the Year Edition's announcement; it is also available right now, both online and in game retailers. So if you've been waiting to jump in, that can end today for a reasonable price.
